Serves: 6. Preparation time: 15 minutes. Fried Twinkies®

  • 6 Hostess Twinkies® *
  • 6 Wooden Popsicle Sticks (Optional)
  • 2+ C. Cooking Oil
  • 2 C. All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 C. Whole Milk
  • 2 T. Vinegar
  • 1 T. Vegetable Oil
  • 1 C. All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 t. Baking Powder
  • ½ t. Salt
  • ½ C. Powdered Sugar
  • 1 C. Any Berry Preserves

* Freeze the Twinkies® for at least 2 hours (or overnight) before cooking.

• Put the Cooking Oil in a deep fryer and heat to 375°F. While that's heating, mix the Milk, Vinegar and Vegetable Oil in a bowl. Stir. In a second bowl, mix the Flour, Baking Powder and Salt together. Now blend both wet and dry bowl contents together until smooth, making a Batter. Refrigerate until the Cooking Oil is at temperature.

• Insert Popsicle Sticks (optional) half way into each frozen Twinkie® from the long end. Dust the Twinkie® with Flour, then coat entirely with Batter up to the Stick. With a grabbing utensil hold each by the Stick and submerge the coated Twinkie® in the hot Oil. 3 can be cooked at a time if dropped into the hot Oil together; they will float. Turn occasionally and cook until the Twinkies® are evenly golden brown (about 3-4 minutes). Remove with a grabbing utensil or slotted spoon and move to a paper towel covered plate to dry. Let cool 5 minutes. Repeat with the last three. Serve each on a dessert plate, sprinkle with Powdered Sugar, add warm Fruit Preserves for dipping.

Twinkies® - These snack cakes were invented in 1930 by Jimmy Alexander Dewar for the Continental Baking Co. in Schiller Park, IL. They were originally filled with Banana Cream and named Twinkies® after seeing an ad for "Twinkle Toe Shoes". During WW-II, Bananas were rationed, so they switched to a Vanilla Cream filling. Time Magazine named Twinkies® the number one "Iconic Junk Food". During the Hostess bankruptcy in 2012, production stopped. It started back again on July 15, 2013 with new owners. Hostess Brand is now owned by J.M. Smucker Company. In Mexico, Twinkies® are called Submarinos. They can also be found in China and other countries around the world. The Fried Twinkie® was made popular Brooklyn, NY. in 2002 and spread to many state and county fairs during the decade. Hamburger Mary's always has "Fried Twinkies®" on their menu as a nod to the gay community who use that term frequently to describe young boys.
